Spelling of Verbs Ending In -Ed and -Ing

Here are some spelling guidelines for adding -ing and -ed to verbs:

DOUBLE THE CONSONANT...

(1)

After one syllable verbs that end in a vowel and consonant:

 

  • tip-tipped-tipping
  • hug-hugged-hugging

(2)

After two syllable verbs that are stressed on the second syllable:

 

  • refer-referred-referring
  • admit-admitted-admitting

(3)

Don't double the consonant if the verb is stressed on the first syllable:

 

  • frighten-frightened-frightening

(4)

Don't double the consonant of verbs that end in two vowels and one consonant:

 

  • earn-earned-earning
  • ruin-ruined-ruining

WHEN THE VERB ENDS IN Y...

(1)

Add -ing or -ed if -y is preceded by a vowel:

 

  • enjoy-enjoyed-enjoying
  • stay-stayed-staying

(2)

Change -y to i and add -ed if -y is preceded by a consonant:

 

  • try-tried
  • cry-cried

(3)

Leave y and add -ing if -y is preceded by a consonant:

 

  • try-trying
  • cry-crying

WHEN THE VERB ENDS IN -IE...

(1)

Change -ie to -y and add -ing:

 

  • die-dying
  • lie-lying

(2)

Just add -d:

 

  • die-died
  • lie-lied

DIRECTIONS:  Some of the following sentences contain spelling errors. Circle the errors and correct them.

  1. I've really enjoyed writting the final paper for my geography class.
  2. I decided to write about my country and I tryed to include information about the terrain, the major cities and the major industries.
  3. I was afraid at  the begining of the English course the Aram Language Center, but the teacher there helpped me overcome this fear and participate in everything.
  4. The openning section of the paper discusses the location and provides a brief history.

Describing the culture of my country was the most difficult part of the paper because it's very hard to convey cultural information to someone who has never visited my country.
