Using Wish, Hope, and Expressions of Condition

WISH:  Use wish to talk about a situation you want to be different, but which you know is impossible to change.

  • I wish I could go to the Aram Language Center. (This is a wish about the future; use a past modal and verb or a past tense after "wish.")
  • I wish I didn't have to work. (This is a wish about the present; use a past tense after "wish.")
  • I wish I had studied sooner so I could have gone to your party. (This is a wish about the past; use a past perfect tense after "wish.")

HOPE:  Use hope to talk about a situation that is possible in the future or which already happened in the past..

  • I hope you (will) register at the Aram Language Center . (Use a future tense.)
  • I hope you had a good time yesterday. (Use a past tense.)

UNLESS means "if not."

  • Unless I finish work early, I won't be able to come to your party.

PROVIDED THAT means that only one condition will bring about the result desired.

  • Provided that I finish work early, I will be at your party.

OTHERWISE is a sentence connector that means "if not." It comes at the beginning of a sentence or independent clause.

  • You had better study for your exam. Otherwise, you may not pass.

WITHOUT + NOUN means "if someone or something didn't have something." Use the same verb tenses as the three types of conditionals.

  • Without your help, the party would never have been such a success. (If I didn't have your help, the party would never have been a success.
  • Without friends, my life would be lonely. (If I didn't have friends, my life would be lonely.)
